CONNECTING AN IP-TERMINAL TO THE NETWORK

When a credit card terminal is unable to connect to the internet via the local network, there is often a common problem. The local network has a router given to them by their ISP with only one single port. This would lead to the computer using the only IP address given by their ISP.

A router's primary task is to take your high-speed internet connection and make it available to more than one computer. This is accomplished through NAT, or Network Address Translation. There are several different flavors of NAT, but in this context NAT allows multiple devices on your home or business network share the single IP address provided by your ISP.

When you use a broadband router with NAT (and virtually all include NAT capabilities) on your home network, the router receives the ISP-issued IP address and your computers are issued unique IP addresses from an especially reserved range of private addresses (most commonly 192.168.x.x).

The router then uses the ISP's public address to communicate with the Internet, and in turn provides connectivity to the devices/systems on your private network by tracking their IP addresses and monitoring traffic so it knows what sites each system is in contact with.

Some other important reasons why to use a broadband router:
  • Routers let computers to share a cable, DSL, or satellite Internet connection.
  • Routers generally offload burden from your computers, leaving more performance for your applications.
  • Routers have filtering that stop local users — such as children — from accessing sites you do not want them to see.
  • All computers connected to the Internet are subject to attack. You need router security features to be safe.
  • Some routers support advanced security such as VPN, which allow home users to safely log in to their businesses remotely.
  • Some routers have firewalls providing considerable protection against hacking into your computers.
  • Routers monitor network usage, and can send email alarms when abnormal things happen.
  • Many wireless routers support WPA — extremely strong encryption for your wireless data.
  • It is a low cost improvement to your local network. Available through most office supply and electronics stores for around $70.00.
